Making Connections

Kim Braun

Founder of SLEEC

Kim always knew she wanted to be a teacher. Her career as an educator spans from elementary through high school, with the majority of those years teaching American Sign Language to high school students in New York. During that time she was an advisor to the community service club. In 2015 Kim moved to Connecticut and began working for and volunteering with numerous nonprofit organizations. The idea for SLEEC came as a way of fusing her two passions: building community and education.

Mission

SLEEC connects students to authentic learning experiences through service and partnerships with community organizations for youth-led action.

FAQs

How do students do service projects during COVID?

There are many ways students and schools can engage in hands-on service without having to be face-to-face. Students can advocate for a cause (e.g. write letters to Congress), build philanthropy through crowd sourcing (e.g conduct a food drive), or bring awareness to a community issue (e.g. create informational brochures with vaccine data).

The school day is already so packed, how will teachers fit in one more thing to teach?

Service-learning is incorporated into the content by starting with what teachers are already doing. The same standards are met, SL is just another approach to achieving them - and then some!

What grades does SLEEC work with?

Service-learning is an excellent instructional strategy for any age. SLEEC mainly works with high school students, however we also consult with lower schools on ways to incorporate service-learning into their curricula.
